David Brooks

David was born and raised in San Jose. In 1978 David graduated from West Valley College with an AS degree in Park Management. From there he went to Cal State Sacramento where he graduated in 1980 with a BS in Recreation and Park Administration. In the fall of 1980 David enrolled into NPS Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Rosa.

While David was going to school he was working the summers for Santa Clara County Parks as a Seasonal Park Ranger. In the summer of 1982 David accepted a job with the City of Santa Cruz Water Department as a permanent Park Ranger managing their drinking water reservoir, Loch Lomond, where after 25 years he still works.

David's duties at Loch Lomond include park operations, watershed protection and monitoring, run a park store/boat rental, park maintenance, first aid, law enforcement incidents (public officer), working with volunteers, interpretation and anything else that may come up. David is also responsible for operating the park water treatment plant. David holds Two State operator licenses for water treatment and water distribution. He has spent 9 months working out of class as the Chief Ranger; in which he was thankful someone finally got selected to do that job. David is proud to be a field ranger.

He was a member of the Western Interpreters Association (WIA) until they folded. A member of PRAC since 1982. He was the coeditor of the Cal Ranger newsletter from 1990 to 1992 when he started being the Signpost (PRAC Member Newsletter) Newsletter Editor.

David has served faithfully in this capacity ever since. He always makes sure every edition is a professional publication with useful information for PRAC members. This job is not always easy, as he must constantly solicit articles from PRAC members and other sources. He has served seven PRAC Presidents/Boards and has published over 90 issues. All that David has asked for in return has been the occasional software upgrade.

Some of the awards David has received throughout his career include PRAC's Professional Citation award as well as PRAC's first Founders Award.

David married Patty Walker in 1981 and they just celebrated their 25th anniversary. His time off is enjoyed at the beach as often as possible or going for hikes in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He also enjoys traveling with his wife around California seeing sites and parks.
